Engine noises vary in intensity and frequency, depending on their source. It is difficult to describe engine noises with mere words: experience will have to be built up, using the descriptions in this chapter as guide. Engine Noises One of the most difficult of all trouble-shooting jobs and which occurs frequently-is to locate the source of noise or “knocks” in an engine. Actually of course every rotating or reciprocating part in the engine is a potential-source of noise. In many cases, however, certain noises posses’ characteristics, which help, identify their origin.

These characteristics van’ somewhat between different engines and experience is probably the best guide in some cases. In most cases it will be helpful to utilize an instrument of the stethoscope type to localize the noise at some definite section of the engine. These instruments magnify the intensity of noise and the sound becomes louder as the instrument nears the region of the noise,
