A viscosity numbering system is used to rate the thickness of engine oil. A high number would indicate thicker oil. A lower number would denote thinner oil. The SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) standardized this numbering system. For this reason, oil viscosity is written SAE 10, SAE 20, SAE 30, etc.
Engine oil viscosities commonly range from a thin SAE 10 weight to a thick SAE 50 weight. Auto manufactures specify and SAE number for their engines.
